Prior to the opening of 1Borneo, Centre Point Sabah was the biggest shopping mall in Kota Kinabalu Sabah. Located at the heart of the city, Centre Point Sabah is still the most famous and popular shopping centre for those living in Kota Kinabalu. Opened on August 25 in 1990, the six floors of shopping mall with a 10-storey office tower still attracts about 50,000 shoppers a day despite competition from new malls such as City Mall and 1Borneo. Centre Point Sabah was built on reclaimed land looking out to the sea, away from the bustling old Kota Kinabalu town. It was a huge gamble then, but certainly a huge success now.
Centre Point has almost everything you want. It has Pacific Ngiu Kee departmental store as its anchor tenant. There are 450 shops selling clothes, videos, shoes, jewellery, books, computer ware, crafts, mobile phones, cameras and music CDs. A bank, bowling alley, money changers, cinema, pool parlor, games arcade, cafés, fast food restaurants and food court occupy some of the 195,096 sq metres (2.1m sq feet) of space. The tower block has 180 offices.
There’s always an event going on on both the ground floor event hall and also the 5th floor Palm Square. The local PC Fair is always held in the grand ballroom but is much smaller than the ones in KL.
