Fancy looking at aquariums, fishes, sea urchins, whiprays and other marine life while in Kota Kinabalu?  The Marine Aquarium And Museum of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) campus is the place to go.  It houses over 60 species of corals from 9 families and on display are 8 newly identified species collected during Expedition around Sabah waters.

Only about 1 km away from 1Borneo Hypermall and 3 km from Kota Kinabalu city, the Marine Aquarium & Museum is part of Marine BioValley of UMS which is dedicated to inspiring ocean conservation through education, research, innovation and exploration. Among the exciting things that you could see in the Marine Aquarium & Museum are :

  1. the free standing exhibition tanks where compatible fishes such as copper band butterfly fish, clown fish, squirrelfish, parrotfish, wrasses, damsel, angelfish and surgeonfish are placed together and other predatory fish like groupers, rock cod, snappers and other species are housed separately
  2. live open water reef exhibition centre houses high value species such as groupers, snapper and seabass
  3. live shallow reef exhibition centre
  4. mangrove walk giving a close look at the coastal vegetation
  5. contemporary Marine and Maritime Museum offers close viewing of the preserved remains of marine flora and fauna, including seaweeds, corals, turtles and marine mammals
  6. Multimedia Interactive Information Kiosk, and
  7. Sipadan deep dive diorama


Marine Aquarium


The most famous fish is, of course, the Clown Fish as almost all have watched ‘Finding Nemo’.  And the most curious is the Grouper Hybrid, produced for the first time in the world at the hatchery of Borneo Marine Research Institute.
