I went to the Sabah International Halal Showcase 2010 (promoted as the largest halal trade show with 150 booths showcasing a variety of halal products) on it’s first day opening. It was interesting to note that among the front booths welcoming us were those of clothing items such as baju batik, baju kurung, etc. A few were developers’ booths showcasing their housing/shoplots, water filtering products, jewellery and home decor pieces.
Maybe only about half of the booths at the Sabah International Halal Showcase were halal food and I noticed that quite a few were from our neighbour, Brunei. There was also a talented dude selling paintings and handpainted stones. I was also attracted by the handicraft items from Indonesia and Thailand.
I went there on an empty stomach and expecting to purchase a lot of halal food products but ended up buying nothing and my wife purchased a very reasonably-priced pair of jeans. I think that’s because most of the food on sale were very similar to one another that we became uncertain on which were the better ones. There were so many ‘Acar’ and kuih-muih similar to those that I gobbled during last Raya, and I was not ready to eat more. There were also a few yummy crackers stalls (seaweed, prawn, etc, crackers).
I actually wondered why there were no banks offering their Islamic financing products since many developers were there promoting houses and shoplots. I hope Sabah International Halal Showcase will be held again next year and this time with more participants from other countries featuring halal products from the middle east countries, Turkey, Europe, etc. I wished there were baklava on sale!
