40 years ago, Kampung Sembulan was just like any other ordinary village that is located near to the town. With the fast-paced development of Kota Kinabalu city surrounding and almost encroaching on Kampung Sembulan, it has become a gold-mine of sorts. Being a unique ‘city village’, Kampung Sembulan is now neighbour to, among others, Harbour City, Ming Garden Hotel, Sadong and Sutera Harbour Resort.
If you have not been to Kota Kinabalu for a while, it will be hard not to notice the difference. The river/monsoon drain separating the village from Sadong is way neater with the construction of the user-friendly 1.6km footpath from Sadong Jaya to Kampung Sembulan Lama. There are also quays for boats.
The RM45 million river beautification project will not only improve the looks, it will also ensure Kampung Sembulan’s cleanliness. The project “Sembulan River Park”, funded by the federal government, is scheduled to complete by 2013. It is part of the huge Sabah development corridor project, which will involve the southward expansion of Kota Kinabalu.
To ensure the safety of its visitors, the well-lit park, with fountain and music filling the air, is monitored by a police kiosk through 47 cctv round the clock. The park caters for all, including those in wheelchair and babies in prams. It also has a toilet for the handicapped and a room for mothers to change their baby’s diapers. It will definitely be a nice place to take the family for a stroll and do some jogging.
