Taman Ujana Rimba Topika or Rain Forest Park is another popular recreation spot that you can find in Kota Kinabalu. The park is located at Penampang Road and about four kilometres from the city centre. It is quite a strategic location as it is near to the Sabah State Library, State Archive Department, Geochemistry Department, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Agriculture and Fisheries Departments and several housing estates. It is also a very nice place to relax and exercise as the facilities there includes jogging track of 2 kilometers, children playground, yoga area, ample parking spaces and a tropical restaurant.
The size of Taman Ujana Rimba Tropika is about four hectares and the construction of this park is based on three concepts, which is for protocol events, recreational and learning activities. Taman Ujana Rimba Tropika which costs about RM12 million is funded entirely by the Country Landscaping Department, Housing Ministry and the local Government. It was officiated on April 12, 2003, and was handed over to the City Hall for management. For protocol events, it is used as the site for the Sabah State Warrior’s Day celebration each year, while the recreational asset of this park attracts the attention of nearby housing dwellers.
The park has indigenous jungle trees such as the binaung, laran, belian, seraya, menggaris and jati for learning activities. It is no wonder that this park is also frequented by university students who do their research there. Nonetheless, the main attraction is the thousands of beautiful Hibiscus trees which were planted there since 2005. It also has resting huts, canteen, public toilets, surau (prayer room) and parking lots.
